If you're looking at Kauai, one of main strips on the south side of the island is Poipu, known as the sunny spot. Generally better weather and cool beaches. The south side is closer to the Waimea Canyon hikes.
North side is Hanalei Bay and Princeville, with a lot of hidden beaches (Anini is one). It's not as commercial (yet), but has some great food in spots. Closer to the Napali Coast.
I like the feel of the north side better. Hanalei Bay is kind of my happy spot.
