Bailey

Day 1
# 1 : G Open 200 Medley (2:26.54Y ) – Breast was better, but was sluggish and added 2 seconds – 2:28.54
# 3 : G Open 50 Free (27.86Y ) – No improvement, in fact added about a second – 28.67
# 7 : G Open 500 Free (5:49.07Y ) – Looked extremely sluggish and had an extremely poor swim adding almost 10 seconds – 5:58.78

Coach was not pleased with Bailey after the meet. He told her she swims faster in practice and she needs to do better in meets even if they aren’t big meets…

Day 2

# 41 : G 13-14 200 Free (2:11.27Y ) – Like the 50 and the 500 she added time – 2:14.04
# 47 : G 13-14 100 Back (1:06.84Y ) – Another add – 1:09.56
# 53 : G 13-14 200 Breast (2:59.09Y ) – Basically matched her seed time – 2:59.26
# 59 : G 13-14 100 Fly (1:02.07Y ) – Another add, coaches wife (who’s was also a college swimmer said her form still looked extremely good) – 1:06.25

Day 3
# 95 (d3/s5): G 13-14 200 Fly (2:17.54Y ) – looked good early, but faded bad…2:27.78
# 107 : G 13-14 100 Breast (1:25.03Y ) – Finally a drop…1:23.72, and had she not waited so long on the streamline portion of the stroke would have dropped another couple seconds.
# 113 : G 13-14 100 Free (1:00.50Y ) – another add…1:02.33

Bailey was extremely disappointed following this meet. This is the first time she’s had a meet this poor. We aren’t sure what the underlying cause was…some parents indicated that she might be reaching the stage in swimming where time drops don’t occur except when the swimmer is tapered, and they stated that it happened to their daughters when they turned 13. I hope not, because that would typically indicate the swimmer is finished growing, and I hope Bailey will get a couple inches taller before she’s fully grown. It could also be a result of increased effort in practice and her body not fully recovering from that to race. We just aren’t sure what the problem was at this point and we’ll be watching closely going forward.

Bear

Day 1
# 2 : B Open 200 Medley (2:18.97Y ) – improved breast help lead him to a 2 second drop…2:16.75
# 4 : B Open 50 Free (27.18Y ) – Got the 26 low – 26.16, but that wasn’t good enough to beat some of the teammates he wanted to beat.
# 8 : B Open 500 Free (5:14.54Y ) – Fell a little off the pace in the 3rd 50, and I failed to recognize how far off the pace he was…only signaling him to pick it up a little. This got him behind the clock and he worked hard to catch up, but didn’t make it. – 5:18.35

Day 2
# 42 : B 13-14 200 Free (2:00.78Y ) – looked tired and sluggish in this one – 2:07.10.
# 48 : B 13-14 100 Back (1:08.78Y ) – over reaching with his arms, a little deliberate – especially at the walls but still managed to swim right at his seed time – 1:09.09
# 54 : B 13-14 200 Breast (2:56.50Y ) – Pullouts were amazing…so interesting to watch Bear excel in the pullouts where Brett struggles with them. It makes the race so different. Bear was getting to the middle of the pool on most of his underwaters. That helped him to drop a bunch of time – 2:48.23
# 60 : B 13-14 100 Fly (1:04.00Y ) – started out good, faded late – 1:04.98

Day 3
# 96 : B 13-14 200 Fly (2:14.08Y ) – Managed to drop time in an extremely fast heat – 2:13.93
# 102 : B 13-14 200 Back (2:20.89Y ) – Identical to the 100 back and like the 100 back almost matched his seed time - 2:21.03
# 108 : B 13-14 100 Breast (1:23.97Y ) – Pullouts here were even better than the 200…leading to a very strong 1:17.09.
# 114 : B 13-14 100 Free (56.56Y ) – Nothing left for this race…like the 200 free he just looked out of gas – 59.01.

Brett

Day 1
# 2 : B Open 200 Medley (2:30.12Y ) – went out hard on the fly leg and managed an ok 35 second split. Back was his typical 38, but breast was slow for him. He admitted he was tired from going out hard on the fly and he couldn’t catch his breath (I think this is because he doesn’t do a good job of blowing the carbon dioxide out of his lungs between breaths). Managed to almost match his personal best though – 2:30.97
# 4 : B Open 50 Free (28.34Y ) – Got into the 27s – 27.76
# 8 : B Open 500 Free (5:51.48Y ) – strokes looked so much stronger and better this time out…he dropped a bunch of time finishing with a 5:38.45. Coach was pleased with this effort, but told Brett he could go much faster still and to keep working on building his endurance and learning how to pace himself rather than allow others pace to influence him (he was influenced in this one by a swimmer next to him, who had an early lead, but Brett caught him and rather than swim around him, he settled into that swimmers pace for about 100 yards before finally leaving him behind).

Day 2
# 44 : B Open 200 Free (2:08.68Y ) – With improvement in the 50 and 500 I expected improvement here and I wasn’t disappointed. Brett dropped 3+ seconds, 2:05.30…and again I think he’ll be able to go faster once he learns to push just a little more.
# 50 : B Open 100 Back (1:11.44Y ) – Took it out much harder than normal, which was great, but the increased effort caused him to serpentine through the lane, creating drag and slower times. – 1:13.56. If he cleans up the form with that effort, he should be able to drop time.
# 56 : B Open 200 Breast (2:37.34Y ) – After a good start to the meet, this was a disappointing swim for him. He added time finishing in 2:41.28. I was concerned this might lead to a letdown performance the rest of the meet.
# 62 : B Open 100 Fly (1:18.17Y ) – started out strong, again with a 35 opening 50, but back half really was slow, breathing every stroke and getting stiff, which prevents good transition. Finished in a disappointing 1:20.27

Day 3
# 100 : B Open 200 Back (2:28.59Y ) – surprisingly, Brett was able to maintain form and increase effort a little in this race to get a new personal best time of 2:25.98. I didn’t expect the drop here because he been ok in this race, so this was a nice surprise.
# 106 : B Open 100 Breast (1:14.17Y ) – was really concerned about this one. Brett desperately needed an improvement in a breaststroke race…and he managed to get it – 1:13.32. I also counted about 4 relatively unproductive strokes heading into the final turn and 1 at about the 85 yard mark. If he cleans those up, he’ll drop more time.
# 112 : B Open 100 Free (1:00.09Y ) – blew right by 60…58.56
