2015 Cranberry Classic @ Birmingham Crossplex – 11/6-7

The travel meet for the kids is this weekend, and they will be on a bus Saturday morning heading to Birmingham. The wife and I won’t be attending so all I’ll be able to do is report on times and any comments from friends or coaches. It’s hard to predict how this will play out…travel meets are always hard, but with the team stepping off the bus on Saturday and racing just a few hours later, I’m not at all sure how the travel will impact them. Also, you just never know how well they will take care of themselves (food, sleep, water, etc.)

Bailey
# 45 (d2/s3): G 13-14 100 Fly (1:02.07Y ) – still wanting to get down to 60 seconds, but based on her last meet and the fact that the coach has flat out stated that he won’t be tapering her (or Bear for that matter) until age group state; if she can get close to a personal best she would be doing real well – especially given that she’ll be racing not long after stepping off the bus.
# 49 (d2/s3): G 13-14 100 Breast (1:23.72Y ) – coach told her she was a little delayed in initiating the pull phase of the stroke, but that the rest of her stroke looked pretty good. If she increases the turnover she could drop another couple of seconds here.
# 57 (d2/s3): G 13-14 200 Medley (2:26.54Y ) – should get faster with the improved breast alone, but the question is faster than what – in this case I’ll say her last time out.
# 65 (d2/s3): G 13-14 200 Back (2:18.93Y ) – she’s feeling better about her backstroke form right now
# 111 (d3/s5): G 13-14 200 Fly (2:17.54Y ) – I think the wear and tear of practice, but what is likely to be a long night with little rest (sleeping in a hotel room with 3 other girls isn’t a recipe for success) will lead to a poor swim here.
# 115 (d3/s5): G 13-14 50 Free (27.86Y ) – she needs to improve, but I’m not expecting much
# 127 (d3/s5): G 13-14 100 Back (1:06.84Y ) – see 200 back
# 131 (d3/s5): G 13-14 200 Free (2:11.27Y ) – again, her freestyle is better, but I just am not expecting much given how hard she works at practice and the whole impact of the travel meet.

Bear
# 46 (d2/s3): B 13-14 100 Fly (1:04.00Y ) – was on pace to drop time a few weeks back, but had a terrible last turn and struggled home, adding almost 1 second. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a drop (assuming he doesn’t have to take Dramamine on the bus…if he does that, his entire Saturday will probably be shot).
# 58 (d2/s3): B 13-14 200 Medley (2:16.75Y ) – dropped last time out…I don’t expect another drop.
# 66 (d2/s3): B 13-14 200 Back (2:20.89Y ) – has to start going hard into the walls, until he does that he’ll lose time on every turn, even with his strong underwater work.
# 70 (d2/s3): B Open 1650 Free (17:53.78Y ) – First time out on this one, and I don’t expect an improvement. If he can get under 18 minutes, he will have done extremely well. No taper can really make the distance swims burn, and he’ll have someone doing his numbers that won’t signal him with the detail he’s use to.
# 112 (d3/s5): B 13-14 200 Fly (2:13.93Y ) – managed a drop in this last time, so I don’t expect one this time around.
# 118 (d3/s5): B Open 50 Free (26.16Y ) – could drop here…he’s gone faster in the past…but a 1650 the night before and a 200 fly the event before make me feel that he’ll be toast by the time this one goes off.
# 128 (d3/s5): B 13-14 100 Back (1:08.78Y ) – see 200 back
# 132 (d3/s5): B 13-14 200 Free (2:00.78Y ) – wants to go under 2 minutes, but I don’t think he’ll get close in the last race of the travel meet.

Brett
# 52 (d2/s3): B Open 100 Breast (1:13.32Y ) – hope he can manage another drop…
# 60 (d2/s3): B Open 200 Medley (2:30.12Y ) – could drop here with the stronger fly, especially if he doesn’t run out of gas in the breast like he did last meet.
# 68 (d2/s3): B Open 200 Back (2:25.98Y ) – personal best last time, means he probably adds this time around
# 70 (d2/s3): B Open 1650 Free (20:11.76Y ) – if his mind is right for this one and he goes after it, he could drop over a minute…
# 118 (d3/s5): B Open 50 Free (27.76Y ) – there is more time to be had here…I think he can go mid 26s…but I don’t think it happens in this race.
# 122 (d3/s5): B Open 200 Breast (2:37.34Y ) – I hope he at least gets close to this time
# 130 (d3/s5): B Open 100 Back (1:11.44Y ) – he should drop here, if he’ll just approach it like he did his 200 last meet, he’ll drop.
# 134 (d3/s5): B Open 200 Free (2:05.30Y ) – has had a couple strong 200 frees in practice recently, reporting he’s managed 2:02s…I don’t think he gets there, especially at the end of a long meet, but he might drop…
