I think what happened with Grey Matter has always been a part of it. I am not sure if it's the driving force behind it, but Walt's pride has always been his biggest weakness. There is no doubt that he's always been a difficult person to work with because of it and he's always gotten very prickly whenever he's even been perceived as being weak or pitiable.
