I've got skills for all of them actually. With exception of the screw-up on Hirsch, I went with the quickest one for the reason you mention of having the option of selling them. Later on I imagine it'll be more important to be concerned with having specific skills for specific positions.
As far as the other stuff:
1). We aren't there yet
2) What you're talking about is a viable way that can be quite successful. I would counter though that it's just that: one viable way. There are others. I don't think it's necessarily the case that defender attributes are more important than those of other positions, for example; there's no law saying we have to play more defenders than other positions indefinitely; etc. We could still go that route of course, I'm just trying to keep options open for everybody when there's more than one way to skin the cat here.
