Trade Deadline
July 1985

The team is playing better than expected and by the middle of July we were a full 10 games above .500 and in the thick of the playoff race. I really didn't have any intention of making a deal here. The team was playing alright, but there was no expectation of anything and without any real bargaining chips the hope that anything was going to get done was slim. Then along came a desperate team anxious to move an unhappy outfielder just when we were in the thick of the injury bug. All of our regular outfielders were on the DL and it was getting a little slim. We landed a decent player for a song. The timing couldn't have been better.

10. OF Chris Young; 28; aquired via trade with Honolulu of the PCB.

Young was a former 2nd round draft pick by the Napa Owls back in '76. He played with the Owls for his entire career until trying out free agency last offseason. Then he moved out to Hawaii. His best year was in '81 when he hit 24 HR's and drove in 117 runs while batting .327. He finished 3rd in MVP voting that year. Since then his production has dropped, but he remained a career .300 hitter with 99 career home runs. Defensively he is about average which isn't a liability. We sent Honolulu a minor league relief pitcher to complete the trade.
