Steve Victory JOURNAL – Wrapping up 2016

NBA agents must be staked out in Tuscaloosa. One convinces sophomore center Jordie Barnes to jump after his sophomore season. Yikes – and he barely got his feet wet in the college game, averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds for ‘Bama in 2015-16...

Victory recruits hard at the center position and gets two good ones: 6-11 Darrell Wynn out of Eugene, Oregon and 6-11 Loren Tracy out of Titusville, Fla. Wynn, amazingly enough is listed by 3-star National Prep and .400 Software as the number one prospect in the land!! His stats aren’t all-world but solid enough: 23 ppg, 9 rpg, 2.8 bpg. Tracy looks better at least on paper: 20.3 ppg, 17.7 rpg, 3.7 bpg… The other recruit is a shooting guard named Earl Dixon out of Wichita, Kansas. He’ll be more of a project (please have good potential!)…

Mark Bell finishes as ‘Bama’s points lead with 13.3 ppg but only played 15 games. Alex Henry averages 12.2 ppg, while Travis McQuay and Cliff McWilliams add about 11 ppg each… Michael Slater and McWilliams lead the team in assists with about 5 each. No one is close to Barnes’ 10 rebounds per contest or his 2.8 blocks… Why are you going away so soon?

The NCT champ for 2016 is Pittsburgh, which outduels UConn for the crown. Mississippi State, a team that ‘Bama upset early in the SEC campaign, makes the Final Four along with Illinois. The Fighting Illini have three straight trips to the Final Four without a win… (I believe I incorrectly listed them as winning the 2014 crown. They in fact lost to Georgetown in the semis and G-town won it all over Duke)…

Kentucky beats Wake Forest in the ACT finale. Of course, Alabama beat Kentucky as well this season. Kent State, which eliminated the Tide, does make the Final Four along with Stanford…

Job offers: for the second or third time South Carolina comes calling on coach Victory to try to lure him back to a state where he’s had success. That’s about the only program worth mentioning… No way Victory’s moving to Columbia after all he’s been through at ‘Bama...
