The sleeping Telzeroth lies in his treasure room, napping on a tremendously large pile of gold. I'm unable to take the gate shard without waking the dragon. When I do, it will surely try to eat me.

B)Scare the dragon awake. D20+CHA+Intimidating (Sounds like a bad idea personally)

C)Attack the dragon while he sleeps.
