I've just read the first book and this Martin bloke - he has an interest in English history right? I know next to nothing about him but the situation is really a Richard III apologists version of the end of the War of Roses (to a certain extent). Obviously don't want to spoilerise but King Robert IS Edward IV. Eddard Stark is the Richard III apologists Richard III and the Queen = Elisabeth Woodard. And other stuff that's spoilery.
