After all, the 51 figure was given to them by the state medical examiner's office, about as official as you're going to get in a situation like this.
The miscount seems to have occurred with the officials (who double counted a lot of victims apparently), not sure how the media could have prevented that.

The other thing I saw cited was "communication problems" and the lack of consistent cell phone coverage. Which sounds like the kind of thing that, maybe if you wait a few hours, you can be accurate, if not first.
