Baltimore claimed the early lead in the first inning scoring 2 runs on 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Lee Lacy began the rally when he lined a base-hit. Cal Ripken stepped up to the plate and he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 5th of the season). Baltimore had 9 hits for the afternoon. Storm Davis(3-2) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Davis got help from Nate Snell who was credited with his 3rd save. John Butcher(2-2) was the losing pitcher. It was a good day for Boston thanks to Dwight Evans. He stroked a single in the 1st inning, laced a one-base hit which was good for two runs in the 2nd inning and smacked a three-run homer (his 5th of the season) in the 3rd inning. Boston finished with 11 hits in the victory. The win went to Bob Ojeda(3-3) who allowed 4 runs in 5 innings. Mark Clear recorded the save, his 1st. Tommy John(1-1) was given the loss. He allowed Boston 8 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work. DETROIT AT CHICAGO Tigers.......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 7 0 White Sox....... 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 - 2 7 0 Win:Nelson(1-1) Loss:Terrell(3-2) Save:James(5th) Gene Nelson(1-1) and Walt Terrell(3-2) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with Nelson and the Chicago White Sox coming out on top of the Detroit Tigers 2 to 0. Detroit never recovered after Chicago took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring a single run. That early scoring held up. Chicago and Detroit each finished the afternoon with 7 hits. Bob James earned his 5th save. NEW YORK AT KANSAS CITY Yankees......... 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 - 3 12 1 Royals.......... 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 1 - 4 9 1 Win:Jones(2-1) Loss:Shirley(1-1) Homeruns- W.Wilson(1st), F.White(7th) Center fielder Willie Wilson left the yard and had 3 RBI as the Kansas City Royals outscored the New York Yankees in 12 innings 4 to 3. The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Kansas City won the hard fought contest in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Pat Sheridan reached on an error. Onix Concepcion followed and he lined a single. Wilson then smacked a single resulting in a mighty exciting win for Kansas City and the 36,744 home town fans in attendance. Although they lost, New York did out-hit Kansas City 12 to 9. The victory was credited to Mike Jones(2-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. The loss was charged to Bob Shirley(1-1) in relief. CALIFORNIA AT MILWAUKEE Angels.......... 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 4 3 - 8 9 1 Brewers......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 1 7 1 Win:McCaskill(2-3) Loss:Haas(1-4) Homeruns- R.Jackson(6th), R.Jones(4th) Brian Downing had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the California Angels defeated the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 8 to 1 at COUNTY STADIUM. In the top of the 6th inning California went on top for good plating an isolated run utilizing 2 base hits. Gary Pettis delivered a one-base hit. Rod Carew stepped into the batter's box and he doubled scoring the run. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. The winning pitcher was Kirk McCaskill(2-3) who allowed no runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Moose Haas(1-4) ended up with the loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 7 hits and 1 walk. Harrah provided much of the offense. He doubled scoring a run in the 1st inning, banged out a single in the 3rd inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 2nd of the season) in the 6th inning. Both teams totaled 11 on the afternoon. The win was credited to Mike Mason(1-3) who went 7 innings allowing 6 runs. Dave Schmidt got the save, his 2nd. Neal Heaton(0-6) took the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. 'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Mason said, 'this was one of those times.' SEATTLE AT TORONTO Mariners........ 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 - 3 8 0 Blue Jays....... 2 0 1 1 0 1 5 2 - 12 18 0 Win:Alexander(3-3) Loss:Young(2-3) Homeruns- K.Phelps(2nd), J.Barfield(9th), D.Garcia(3rd) Tony Fernandez had 5 hits and scored 3 times at EXHIBITION STADIUM where the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 12 to 3. Toronto set the tone of the game in the first inning when they scored 2 runs on 4 hits. The big moment was provided by Jesse Barfield who came through for the home fans when he cracked a two-run shot (his 9th of the season). Toronto dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings. Doyle Alexander(3-3) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Matt Young(2-3) absorbed the loss. By surrending 5 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings his ERA jumped from 5.52 to 5.97.
