Orioles topped the Kansas City Royals by the slimmest of margins, 4 to
3.
Baltimore erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 3 runs.
Cal Ripken kicked off the action when he drew a walk. Eddie Murray stepped
into the batter's box and he drew a walk. Fred Lynn then belted a three-run
homer (his 5th of the season). Kansas City had a chance in the 9th but they
came up short.
The win went to Sammy Stewart(3-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Joe Beckwith(1-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'We just made a lot of
mistakes, mostly mental,' Dick Howser said. 'It's bad enough when the other
team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves, that's really bad.'

The Cleveland Indians nipped the Chicago White Sox 4 to 3 at COMISKEY PARK in
a hard fought contest.
Vern Ruhle(2-3) was solid if not spectacular. He went 6 and 1/3 innings
surrendering 8 hits and no walks. Tom Waddell was perfect in relief and
gained credit for his 4th save.
Floyd Bannister(1-4) ended up with the loss. With this win, Cleveland has a
8-22 record. They have been 3-7 lately. With the loss, Chicago has a record
of 3-7 lately, 11-16 overall.

Chet Lemon had 2 base hits and scored 3 times at TIGER STADIUM as the Detroit
Tigers beat the Texas Rangers in 11 innings by the count of 4 to 3.

allowing 1 run. Greg Harris(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief.

Don Baylor went deep and had 4 RBI as the New York Yankees defeated the
Minnesota Twins in 10 innings by a score of 9 to 6 at YANKEE STADIUM.
The score was knotted at 6 after nine innings. New York ended up winning it
in the 10th inning. Don Mattingly led off the inning for New York when he
slapped a base-hit. Dave Winfield stepped up to the plate and he smacked a
single. Baylor then lofted a three-run bomb (his 2nd of the season) making
New York the winners and sending the 24,539 fans home happy. Minnesota had
17 hits in the game while New York had 13, but New York had the more timely
hits.
The win was credited to Dave Righetti(1-1) who went 2/3 of an inning allowing
no runs. Frank Eufemia(1-1) was the loser in relief. The New York ballclub's
record now stands at 19-9. Minnesota has a record of 17-13 after the loss.
