New York did all the necessary damage in the 4th inning as they scored 3 runs on 4 base hits. The highlight belonged to Keith Hernandez who deflated the crowd as he delivered a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners. Atlanta threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Darling(1-2) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Zane Smith(2-3) suffered the loss. Davey Johnson was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back. Now maybe we can relax a little and play the kind of baseball of which we are capable.' PHILADELPHIA AT CINCINNATI Phillies........ 2 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 - 5 7 1 Reds............ 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 1 - 3 11 0 Win:Hudson(1-3) Loss:Soto(2-3) Save:Tekulve(4th) Homeruns- D.Thomas(4th), P.Rose(1st) In a tight game it was the Philadelphia Phillies 5, the Cincinnati Reds 3 at RIVERFRONT STADIUM. Philadelphia promptly took the lead in their half of the first with 2 runs using 2 hits. Jeff Stone opened up the inning nicely when he lined a one-base hit. Juan Samuel followed and he doubled. Mike Schmidt then would ground out which scored a run. Luis Aguayo was up next and he was hit by a pitch. Ozzie Virgil stepped into the box and hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning. Although they lost, Cincinnati did out-hit Philadelphia 11 to 7. Charles Hudson(1-3) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Kent Tekulve gained credit for his 4th save. The losing pitcher was Mario Soto(2-3). He pitched 5 and 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits and 3 walks. The winning ways continue for Philadelphia. They now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. With the loss Cincinnati now has a record of 12-18. MONTREAL AT HOUSTON Expos........... 0 1 0 0 8 1 1 0 0 - 11 14 3 Astros.......... 0 3 2 1 0 4 0 0 0 - 10 13 0 Win:St. Claire(1-0) Loss:Dipino(4-2) Save:Reardon(13th) Homeruns- M.Webster(5th), U.Washington(1st), M.Bailey(1st) Jeff Reardon slammed the door on Houston and second baseman U.L. Washington hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI at The Astrodome where the Montreal Expos beat the Houston Astros 11 to 10. Houston was unable to recover after Montreal went ahead in the 7th inning scoring a single run on 2 hits. Reardon pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 13th save. Randy St. Claire(1-0) allowed 4 runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. The loss was charged to Frank Dipino(4-2) in relief. He pitched 3 innings and surrendered 2 hits and 4 walks.
