One run was the difference at MEMORIAL STADIUM as the Baltimore Orioles
defeated the Kansas City Royals 4 to 3.
Ken Dixon(2-2) contributed a very nice performance in relief. He didn't give
up much, just 2 hits and 1 walk in 3 and 2/3 innings and whiffed an
impressive total of 5 Kansas City batters improving his ERA from 5.02 to
4.45. Kansas City had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up
short.
Mark Gubicza(1-2) was charged with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 8
innings of work. Dick Howser was reflective after the loss, 'We should have
won this one, we just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a
couple more white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

It was a great finish at FENWAY PARK as the Boston Red Sox pulled off a
dramatic comeback beating the Seattle Mariners by the count of 6 to
4.
Boston came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 2
hits. After an out was recorded, Marc Sullivan initiated the scoring spurt
when he doubled. After another out, Tony Armas came to the plate and drew a
walk. Marty Barrett then lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 3rd of the
season) giving Boston the victory as 18,802 happy fans celebrated wildly.
Boston had a total of 11 hits for the game.
The win was credited to Mark Clear(3-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no
runs. Edwin Nunez(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief.
'Now that is what I call fun! I just love baseball, especially games like
this, of course,' John McNamara offered. 'Everyone at the stadium had a
great time - did you see the fans go wild there at the end?!'

George Vukovich hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the Cleveland Indians topped
the Chicago White Sox by a score of 6 to 4 at COMISKEY PARK.
Cleveland brought 5 runs across the plate in the 5th inning when they had 5
base hits. The highlight belonged to Vukovich who silenced the crowd when he
doubled scoring two baserunners. Cleveland finished with 11 hits while
Chicago ended up with 8.
Roy Smith(2-2) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Jerry Reed
earned his 1st save. Joel Davis(1-1) was the loser. He allowed a few too
many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Lou Whitaker connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI and Juan Berenguer
tossed a shutout as the Detroit Tigers man-handled the Texas Rangers - the
final score was 10 to 0.
Berenguer(1-1) was in control of the game from the outset. He was stingy on
the mound, allowing just 8 hits and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA
from 5.59 to 2.89. Detroit managed 13 in their victory.
Jeff Russell(1-4) suffered the loss. He gave up 6 hits and 1 walk in 5 and
1/3 innings.

Third baseman Paul Molitor had 4 hits and Ray Burris pitched a complete game
at COUNTY STADIUM where the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Oakland A's by the
score of 5 to 1.
Burris(2-3) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't allow
much, just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.53 to
3.10. Milwaukee finished with 8 hits in the victory.
Tim Birtsas(1-5) absorbed the loss. Milwaukee now has a record of 6-24.
Oakland has a record of 16-16 after the loss.

Bob Shirley earned the save, his 2nd. The losing pitcher was Mike

Left fielder George Bell hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Toronto Blue Jays
defeated the California Angels in 11 innings by a score of 5 to 4 at
EXHIBITION STADIUM.
The score was tied at 4 after nine. Toronto won it in the 11th inning.
Damaso Garcia slapped a single. Al Oliver stepped up next and he delivered a
single, and an error was also committed, making Toronto the victors to the
delight of the home town faithful. Overall Toronto out-hit California 12 to
8.
