The score was 9 to 3. New York set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Keith Hernandez smacked a single. Darryl Strawberry stepped into the batter's box and he doubled. Gary Carter then reached on an error scoring the run. For the game New York out-hit Atlanta 15 to 11. Rick Aguilera(2-0) got the win allowing 3 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Pascual Perez(0-4) was given the loss. He was touched for 7 hits and 3 walks in 3 innings. The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Philadelphia won the game in the 13th inning. Ozzie Virgil lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 5th of the season). Philadelphia rapped out 17 hits for the afternoon. Don Carman(2-0) allowed no runs in 3 innings, and picked up the victory. Joe Price(0-2) was hit with the loss in relief. Despite the loss, he struckout 6 Philadelphia batters in 3 innings. MONTREAL AT HOUSTON Expos........... 1 0 0 0 3 0 0 1 0 - 5 8 4 Astros.......... 4 1 0 2 4 0 0 1 - 12 13 1 Win:Mathis(1-0) Loss:Laskey(1-2) Homeruns- J.Pankovits(2nd), K.Bass(2nd) Left fielder Jim Pankovits had 4 hits at The Astrodome where the Houston Astros beat the Montreal Expos 12 to 5. The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Pankovits. He stroked a base-hit in the 1st inning, slapped a one-base hit in the 2nd inning, delivered a single in the 4th inning and emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 2nd of the season) in the 5th inning. Houston ended up with 13 hits for the game while Montreal had 8. The winning pitcher was Ron Mathis(1-0) who allowed 5 runs in 7 innings. Bill Laskey(1-2) was the losing pitcher. He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and 4 walks in 4 innings. With this win, Houston has a 14-17 record. They have been 3-7 lately. With the loss, the Montreal ballclub's record is 18-13. Los Angeles had 3 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning with the help of 3 hits. Mike Marshall kicked off the action when he hit a single. Mike Scioscia followed and he slapped a base-hit. Mariano Duncan then tripled scoring two teammates. Bob Bailor came up and he worked the squeeze play to perfection scoring the final run of the inning. Ken Howell pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 5th save. The victory was credited to Jerry Reuss(3-1) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Scott Sanderson(1-3) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 4 walks. ST. LOUIS AT SAN DIEGO Cardinals....... 1 0 1 3 0 1 0 0 0 - 6 14 2 Padres.......... 1 0 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 - 4 8 2 Win:Andujar(5-1) Loss:Thurmond(0-3) Save:Dayley(2nd) In a close game the St. Louis Cardinals got by the San Diego Padres by the score of 6 to 4. In the 4th inning St. Louis scored 3 runs when they had 4 base hits. The highlight belonged to Tommy Herr who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he lashed a single which was good for two runs. St. Louis had 14 hits for the afternoon while San Diego had 8. Joaquin Andujar(5-1) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. Ken Dayley got the save, his 2nd. The loss was charged to Mark Thurmond(0-3). His ERA ballooned from 2.42 to 3.41 as he allowed 6 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 16-15. With this loss, San Diego has a 5-5 record of late, 17-14 overall. PITTSBURGH AT SAN FRANCISCO Pirates......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 4 0 Giants.......... 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 3 - 4 9 1 Win:Lapoint(3-4) Loss:Reuschel(3-3) Save:Davis(9th) Dave Lapoint carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and he hit 2 doubles as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 4 to 0 at CANDLESTICK PARK. Lapoint(3-4) was very good in the win. He allowed only 2 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings lowering his ERA to 2.78. The left-handed Lapoint had his no-hit bid broken up by Mike Brown who singled with one out in the 6th inning. San Francisco had 9 hits for the game and Pittsburgh had 4. Lapoint got relief help from Mark Davis who gained credit for his 9th save. The loss was charged to Rick Reuschel(3-3). He surrendered 1 run and 5 hits in 5 innings.
