Steve Victory JOURNAL – Recruiting Update 2009-10

There is some promise in Victory’s first recruiting class at Alabama but nothing too earth-shattering. No Chad Drivers or Tim Weavers in this mix. (Driver opted to go pro after his sophomore season at Charleston by the way and was picked in the high first round - wow).

The most promising player is shooting guard Waitari Condill from North Carolina. He averaged about 22 ppg as a senior in high school but wasn’t much of an assist man (and it took Victory awhile to pronounce his name right). Point guard Jason Rude looks OK but will need a few seasons under his belt before he can really contribute.

The jury remains out on PF Fernando Williams and C Brad Nooner. Both had pretty good high school stats – until signing with Alabama. And then those numbers promptly tanked. And then coach Victory promptly slapped his forehead wondering why he had extended scholarship invitations to space-fillers.

As Victory scans the roster coming back for 2010-2011, he is suddenly overcome with fear. The only real post players ‘Bama had this past season – Dominique Little, Daniel Starkey and Johnny McArdle – are all gone, off making a living in the real world as new college graduates (not pro basketball players, mind you).

“We may never get a rebound next season,” he says. “Alabama basketball may have further down to go before it can be brought back up...”

Victory suddenly wishes he had a long beach to walk on...
