Steve Victory JOURNAL – ACT Championship 2014

Unfortunately, this big game at the Garden ends in heartbreaking fashion. Crimson Tide players give their all but ‘Bama loses 79-75. Alabama had held a 4-point lead at halftime but couldn’t stave off Arkansas’ guard tandem of L. Landram and K. Smith. Both pumped in about 20 points and shut down the Tide’s perimeter game (the Tide really missed starting PG Erazem Lekivicius, out with his skull injury).

Michael Bliss scored 22 points for the Tide but everyone else seemed to struggle. Only seldom-used center Craig King joined Bliss in double figures, netting 12. Waitari Condill was held to 2 points. Jason Rude managed 9. Cliff McWilliams, who had played so well during the rest of the ACT, had just 4.

While the loss is tough to swallow, Victory walks out of Madison Square Garden with his head held pretty high. Taking Alabama from four straight losing seasons to a 23-11 record and an ACT runner-up finish is a big step for the program – and his career as well. Now maybe recruits, fans and cynical alumni will embrace him rather than plan how to oust him.

Now maybe the stage is set for a similar run through the NCT in the near future – maybe next year since most of the guys are coming back.
