The earliest record of Japanese pirates in China is from 1302. Because of the economic embargo forced upon Japan by the Ming Dynasty and later the Qing Dynasty, pirate trade was the only way to secure Chinese goods. Bahan, often written as afan or pofan which means 'tattered sails' was the term often used for Japanese pirates. The Ming and Regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi of Japan worked successfully together to stop the Wokou raids. Most of the Wokou began returning to more traditional seafaring activities as enforcement of the bans on maritime trade subsided.
