Long Course State Championships @ Savannah 7/18 - 7/21
We had the Gold Long Course dinner last night, and Brett is currently scheduled to be on both A relays at state. He'll be swimming with Jack and Hunter, plus Parker (who swam fly on the relay back at Stu Hixon that won Brett his first medal). There is an outside possibility that he loses his spot if he swims poorly at State and someone else on the team beats his personal best time, but Brett is swimming well so I don't expect that to happen.
We will be heading down to Savannah today. We have to get there early, because Bear doesn't do well on long car rides and he'll be swimming the
1500 on Thursday. This will be the first time he's ever swum the 1500, which of course begs the question, how did he qualify. Well, when Bear got the qualifying time in the 800, it gave him the qualifying time in the 1500. The 800, when kids are grown is only a girls event, whereas the 1500 is only a boys event - so at the state level the 800 isn't offered for boys even as young as 11, but they give them the ability to swim up in the 1500, which makes perfect sense...if I can swim an 800 why not almost double it...Anyway, Bear is excited to give this a go, we'll see how it works out for him. Warm ups will be at 3:00, but he probably won't actually race until closer to 9, due to the long races and the fact he'll be in the very last heat. Bear is one of only 4 kids 11 years old that will do this event, so at worst he'll finish 4th in state and earn the team a good bit of points.
