Re: Assistant basketball coach leaving

Jeff Wilt, assistant men’s basketball coach, has resigned his position with N.C. State University effective immediately. He has been hired as the new men’s basketball coach for George Mason University. A press conference is planned for later in the week at GMU to announce the hiring. He signed a four-year deal.

Wilt served as Steve Victory’s lead assistant coach for the past two seasons. He played a big role in guiding the Wolfpack to the 2025 national championship in Phoenix. Before coming to N.C. State Wilt was a noted columnist in the Tuscaloosa News (Alabama), The Raleigh News & Observer and other publications in the Northeast.

“We will miss him here in Raleigh, but I’m glad he’ll get the chance to build his own program,” Victory said. “He’s a fine coach, a good man and a stellar recruiter. Other schools in the Colonial Athletic Association had better look out. Wilt will have the Giraffes in position to challenge for CAA titles and NCT berths in no time.”

A replacement for Wilt on the N.C. State staff has not yet been named.

For the record, George Mason University goes by the nickname “Patroits” and not “Giraffes.”
