Yeah, I've run into similar issues with older Samsung TVs. Just get yourself some cheap Roku/Chrome/Fire device for 30ish bucks. It'd likely be an improvement even if you could get the Samsung stuff working.
As for cable cutting, I cut years ago. Use a single HDTV antenna connected to an HDHomerun, which streams to wherever I have Plex accessibility, which is everywhere(inside and outside the house, TV/Mobile/Web). Using Plex for DVR and combination of Nvidia Shield and Plex to watch Live TV, depending where I'm watching from.
