Really, beyond everything else, I think my crappy internet options kills any chance of being able to successfully do this, even if I was totally on board with it.

You could at least switch to Dish, or see what DTV offers you when you tell them you're switching Dish.
Otherwise, I'm still in kind of the same boat. Dish makes it really easy and it's not all that much more expensive than all of the services I'd be juggling without it. And I pretty much only watch TV via DVR, and satellite is by far the cleanest and easiest way to do that.
