December 24, 1984 Poll

Duke continued their season-long run atop the AP Poll by continuing their undefeated season. Rice and Kansas stayed #2 and #3, respectively, and then there was some jostling in the poll, based on writer preference (and region). Maryland, who lost to #22 TCU, dropped eleven spots to #16.

That enabled George Washington to slide back up a spot, to #8. Princeton, who has only gotten in six games this year, continued their rise up the polls. They moved up three spots to #9.

12.26.84: vs Appalachain State (3-7)

The Mountaineers have a surprising history of success, especially recently. They reached the postseason four years in a five-year stretch from 1977-82. They won only ten games a year ago, though, and are still on a downward trend. The culprit is an inability to prevent teams from scoring or rebounding. They are a good rebounding team themselves, but they are still outrebounded on the general.

They are also a team still growing. They start two juniors and two sophomores, and only have two seniors on the roster. There is a lot of potential on the roster. Sam Hurley (14.3 ppg), Laurence Driver (11.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.8 apg), Jason Irby (9.9 ppg, 8.2 rpg) and Randolph McCutchen (8.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg) lead the way. But this roster does contribute up and down. They just don't find consistency, which is why they are losing. Once they find it, the Southern Conference is in trouble.

Jack opens things up with a three. Driver gets App State on the board. Jack hits another three. Driver scores again. Armbruster gets two free throws. It's an early 8-4 lead for GW. Jack heads to the line, and hits both. He has eight points. It's 10-4 with 16:42 left. Driver has seven points...Armbruster gets a dunk off a Jack miss. Lowell Craddock gets a steal and a dunk, but Jack finds Hulett on the other end. It's 14-9 with 15:29 left.

Irby scores. 14-11. Jack gets to the line, and hits both. Then he comes out. Ken Ponder scores. Jon Henson, who'd go on to host Talk Soup in the 90s, hits a three. Jason Irby gets a three-point play, but Hector responds. Then Hector finds Jack. It's 21-20 after Driver scores. Craddock gets a steal off Jack, and McCutchen scores. It's 22-21 with 13:14 to go.

Jack gets a steal, and Hulett eventually scores. Hulett then tips in a Jack miss. Jack gets a steal and a dunk. He's got 14. It's 27-22 with 10:55 left. Driver hits a three. He's got 12. Hurley gets a steal, but Kenny gets it back...Irby resteals. And nothing comes of any of that. Hulett hits from the corner. He's got eight. It's 29-25 with 8:13 to go.

Jack finds Woods. He's got a 14-3-2 line so far. The second line comes in for GW, trying to steal a few minutes for the starters. Boutwell hits a dunk. Grayson is fouled...he hits both. Jack takes over at the C spot. Jack gets to the line, and hits both. 37-26, GW, 5:53 left.

Henson draws a charge on Hector. Jack gets fouled by Irby, and hits two more freebies. It's 39-26. Hurley hits. Patterson gets a layup after beating the press. Irby responds. Woods gets a tip-in. Craddock scores. Woods responds off a Kenny pass. The action is crazy. Jack gets a steal, but misses the dunk. With three minutes to go, it's 45-33. Grayson gets an and-one off a Jack pass. He hits the free throw, and GW leads 48-35.

Woods commits a bad foul at the end of the half. The two free throws by Jones make it 48-37 at the break. Jack has an 18-9-3 line.

Jack gets his tenth rebound to open things up. And then he scores the first points, off Kenny's third assist. Kenny has yet to score. Driver gets a three-point play. Jack scores inside. Driver hits a three. He has 18. McCutchen gets a three-point play, and it's 52-46, GW, as they call time. Jones scores again. It's down to four. Hulett scores...Kenny gets a steal, and Jack gets fouled. He hits both. It's back to eight. McCutchen scores. Jack responds with a three. He has 27-10-3, and it's 59-50. McCutchen hits two free throws...Hulett responds with a three, and it's a 62-52 lead for GW.

The second line comes in early for GW. Craddock scores. David Echevarria scores for GW...I think those are his first collegiate points. Jack, Hulett and Kenny come back. It's 64-56, and GW has seven fouls. App State is in the bonus. Jack finds Perez. Kenny draws a charge on Driver. Jack dunks a Hector miss. He gets a steal and a layup, and Hector does the same. it's 72-56. Irby scores for App State...he has a 9-14-1 line. Jack is with the scrubs at the moment. Perez scores...he has a 4-3-0 line. Jack gets a block...GW has seven of them.

Ali scores off a Hector pass. 76-60 after Jones scores. Perez gets fouled. He hits both. Driver responds...he has 20. Perez gets fouled again...he gets one of two. Jack gets the board...Hector hits. Driver is fouled by Kenny, and he gets the three-point play. Hulett gets fouled. He hits both. It's 83-65. Jack has a 31-20-4 line. Hector gets in another tip. Dude is 5-foot-nothing, and he rebounds like crazy. Jack gets two free throws and comes out with the score 87-65. Driver scores again...he has 25. He hits a three...it's 87-70. He has 28...Jack comes back to finish this off, but App State is charging. Jack gets two more free throws, and with 1:28, comes out for good. The final is 94-77, and that's the game fans have been waiting for from Jack. 35 (sure, on 9-23 shooting, but 14-14 from the line), 21 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks.
