I think Clowney is playing on the franchise tag, so the Seahawks are only getting him (guaranteed) for one season, and they can't (so I've read, might not be accurate) negotiate a long term deal. So basically Seattle is renting Clowney for one season to make a push for the Super Bowl and hoping that he'll give them priority during FA next off season. No one is going to give up much, even for an elite player, if they're only getting him for one season.
