Mods are absolutely, positively worth it for the PC.

I was on this site last night and managed to download a few all-on-in mods that enabled me to play with current (as of a day or two ago) rosters, updated jerseys and uniforms and tons of unlocks. It's all pretty simple to install (especially for text sim dorks who are used to mods) and so yeah. Absolutely worth it.
