Southern Athletic Association Conference Championships - Day 3 - FINALS RESULTS

Bear

1000 Yard Freestyle (10:52.37) : Seeded 8 - The 1000 Free opened the evening session so Bear's effort to medal wasn't going to take long. In order to get 3rd place, Bear was going to have to beat 5 people with faster seed times. At the turn for the 100, Bear was in 3rd place, about a second behind the two leaders and about an eye blink ahead of 4th place. The remaining 4 swimmers were all ~3.5 seconds or more behind Bear. The second 100 Bear maintained his spot in 3rd place, about 3 seconds behind the leader and about 1.5 seconds up on 4th place. The remaining 4 were already at least 5 seconds behind Bear. By the 3rd hundred Bear was now 4 seconds back, but hanging tough with the leaders posting splits under 30 seconds per 50. The 4th place swimmer was back to around 2.5 seconds behind. The remaining 4 swimmers had fully disconnected from the pack and were trailing 8 or more seconds behind Bear. It was definitely looking like they were out of it and the race for 3rd would be between Bear and the guy who was only a couple of seconds back. At the 400 mark Bear was still cruising and he had opened his lead for 3rd to almost 4 seconds, and the spread remained about the same at the half way point. At the 600 yard turn Bear's lead had grown to 5.5 seconds, and it looked like Bear was going to start slowly stretching his lead. At the 700 yard mark Bear's lead was 7 seconds and it was just a matter of finishing the race. Bear continued to turn sub 30 second splits until he went 30.16 between 850 and 900 yards. However, he rebounded quickly to close out the race with a final 100 split of 58.55.

In all Bear finished 3rd in conference with a team record time of 9:47.43. This is also his second fastest time in the 1000, and the best he's posted in several years. It was also an awesome way to finish his first conference championship meet. He walked away with a ton of confidence about what he can accomplish moving forward, and he's already excited about next season.
