NL PRE WWII AT CARIBBEAN Pre-Nationals... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 1 1 Estrellas....... 0 0 0 2 1 0 0 0 - 3 7 0 Win:Cuellar(2-2) Loss:Alexander(2-2) Homeruns- O.Linares(7th) Mike Cuellar carried a no-hitter into the 9th inning as the Caribbean Estrellas defeated the NL Pre WWII ballclub 3 to 0 at Paradise Park. Cuellar(2-2) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the NL Pre WWII offense. He didn't give up much, just 1 hit and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.03. The left-handed Cuellar lost his chance for a no-hitter when Frankie Frisch singled with one out in the 9th inning. Caribbean had 7 hits for the afternoon. Pete Alexander(2-2) took the loss. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 3 walks. AL POST WWII AT JAPANESE LEAGUE Post-Americans.. 0 4 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 - 7 10 1 HOF Players..... 0 0 0 1 2 0 4 0 2 - 9 13 0 Win:Fujimoto(1-2) Loss:Fingers(1-2) Homeruns- H.Killebrew(4th), L.Doby-2(2nd), S.Oh(4th) In a dramatic ending at Nintendo Field the Japanese League HOF Players won in their last at-bat beating the AL Post WWII club by the count of 9 to 7. Japanese League won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. Katsuya Nomura opened up the inning nicely when he laced a one-base hit. Saduharu Oh stepped up to the plate and he smashed a two-run homer (his 4th of the season) resulting in an exciting win for Japanese League and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Overall Japanese League out-hit AL Post WWII 13 to 10. The winning pitcher was Hideo Fujimoto(1-2) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Rollie Fingers(1-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. He gave up 2 hits and no walks without retiring a batter. NL POST WWII AT NEGRO LEAGUE II Post-Nationals.. 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 - 1 3 1 Twos............ 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 - 2 9 0 Win:Manning(2-2) Loss:Seaver(1-1) Homeruns- P.Rose(1st) Verdell Mathis came through with a solid 8 innings at Shadowball Stadium as the Negro League II Twos staged a comeback win over the NL Post WWII team by the count of 2 to 1. Negro League II had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, John Beckwith began the rally when he stroked a base-hit. Louis Santop came to the plate and doubled. Pete Hill then doubled resulting in an exciting win for Negro League II and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. Max Manning(2-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. The losing pitcher was Tom Seaver(1-1). Cito Gaston was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Tommy Lasorda, feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you come up on the short end of one of these!' DEAD BALL ERA AT LATE 20TH Ghosts.......... 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 2 - 3 10 2 Modern Stars.... 2 0 2 3 0 1 3 1 - 12 9 0 Win:Glavine(2-1) Loss:Plank(1-4) Homeruns- E.Collins(5th), M.McGwire(4th) They almost ran out of baseballs at Free Agent Field as Late 20th Modern Stars clobbered the Dead Ball Era Ghosts pitching staff, scoring 12 runs while Tom Glavine(2-1), with relief help from Dennis Eckersley, surrendered 3 runs to Dead Ball Era. Dead Ball Era fell behind quickly as the Late 20th offense came through in the first inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. After two outs Mike Piazza started the attack as he drew a walk. Mark McGwire next to the plate and he cracked a two-run shot (his 4th of the season). Late 20th dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings. Eddie Plank(1-4) was given the loss. He gave up 12 runs in 7 innings of work. FOFC was unable to recover after Left Outs went ahead in the top of the 3rd inning scoring one runner. FOFC had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. The win went to Ferguson Jenkins(3-2) who allowed 6 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Don Drysdale recorded his 3rd save. Rob Nielsen(2-1) was the loser. He gave up 5 runs and 5 hits in 5 innings. When questioned about the loss, Benton Breeze said, 'The fans got to see an exciting game out there this afternoon. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'
