Group E, Round 2, Game 1

New York Yankees at Kansas City

Starting Pitchers

A.J. Burnett (NYY) vs. Jeff Francis (KC)

Game Recap

Kansas City- 3, New York Yankees- 2 -- The Yankees continue to struggle early in this tournament, as Jeff Francis and 4 KC relievers shut down the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees got their share of baserunners, as it seemed Francis was pitching out of a jam in almost every inning he worked, and he finally left after 5 2/3. Billy Butler had 2 RBIs for the Royals, and it was his RBI single in the bottom of the 4th that gave KC a 3-2 lead after the Yankees took a 2-1 lead in the top of the inning. Royals closer Greg Holland got a scare in the top of the 9th, as with 2 outs an a runner on 2nd, Curtis Granderson hit a deep fly ball to left. The wind held it up though, and Alex Gordon made a great catch at the wall to preserve the victory.

Group E, Round 2, Game 3

Atlanta at Los Angeles Angels

Starting Pitchers

Derek Lowe (ATL) vs. Dan Haren (LAA)

Game Recap

LA Angels- 7, Atlanta- 1

While he didn't have an RBI, Erick Aybar was a hero in this one for the Angels. He was 4-4 with 3 singles and a double, along with 3 stolen bases, and he scored every time he got on base. The Angels got a lot of help from Atlanta's defense, as the Braves committed 3 errors, and all 3 were committed by Atlanta RF Jason Heyward. Those errors led to just 1 unearned run though. Dan Haren pitched into the 9th inning, but when Dan Uggla led off with a single, the Angels turned to Kevin Jepsen. He struck out Heyward who had just an awful game, and then got Martin Prado to hit into a 3-6-1 double play to end the game. Haren worked out of a huge jam in the top of the 6th in which the first 4 batters reached base, but he retired the next 3 batters with only 1 run scoring.
