1998 MLS Champions League Draw
Each year, all trophy winners past and present, real or replay, will be invited to contest the MLS Champions League. As this is the first year of the competition, the field will be fairly small, eight teams and non-champions have been added to fill the field out. Each season will put four teams into this year's field.

From 1996:
DC United (MLS Cup winners)
Tampa Bay (Supporters Shield winners)
Los Angeles (MLS Cup runners-up, Supporters Shield runners-up)
Dallas (#4 overall standings)

From 1997:
DC United (MLS Cup winners, Supporters Shield winners)
Kansas City (Supporters Shield runners-up)
Tampa Bay (#3 overall standings)
Colorado (MLS Cup runners-up)

The teams will be drawn into two four-team groups from four two-team pots:
Pot A: DC United teams
Pot B: Tampa Bay teams
Pot C: 1996 Los Angeles, 1997 Kansas City
Pot D: 1996 Dallas, 1997 Colorado

The draw resulted in the following groups:
Group A
1997 DC United
1996 Tampa Bay
1996 Los Angeles
1997 Colorado

Group B
1996 DC United
1997 Tampa Bay
1997 Kansas City
1996 Dallas

The group stage will be a double round-robin for six matches running concurrently with the regular season, played during the middle of the week and every few weeks. Play will begin on May 13. The group winners will then advance to the one-game Champions League final, which will be played in between the end of the regular season and the start of the MLS Cup Playoffs.
