If the locals feel like Watson is betraying them by his recent stances, it makes sense that people are no longer protecting him. I would see this type of stuff as more scorched Earth than trying to leverage him coming back to play. If some of this stuff is proven to be true, it is hard to see him continuing with his career (or at least as the face of any franchise).
