In your specific example of distance, there is an average driving distance setting that you set as part of the season your playing that represents the average driving distance for a 7.0 rated golfer ( average golfer) in distance. So that settng would help make cross era golfers compatible in distance since their golfer rating is based on how well they did in a given year compared to other golfers in that same year. For example (just making up the stats), if Nicklaus was rated a 7.2 in 1975 and tiger was rated a 7.6 in 2000, if they played each other tiger would still have an advantage. If both Nicklaus and tiger had a 7.4 in their respective seasons, then they would generally be even in distance when they played each other.
