Bolland Delivers for Blackhawks; Gets Cut for Efforts

Buffalo News
September 18 2005 (Chicago, IL) -

It's not often you see a player rewarded as first star of the game and then immediately get sent back to junior hockey. But that's exactly what happened to young Blackhawks forward David Bolland, after his one goal, two assist performance led Chicago to a 6-4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

"A great way to finish camp", an upbeat Bolland exclaimed after the game. "They told me to go back to London and rip the league apart and I hope I get my chance in Chicago next year." Bolland will likely team up with Sabres prospect Dylan Hunter to make a formidable pairing for the defending Memorial Cup champion Knights.

Eric Daze scored twice for the Hawks while Bolland, Michael Holmqvist, Pavel Vorobiev and Bryan Bickell scored singles.

Jochen Hecht, Adam Mair, Paul Gaustad and Daniel Paille scored for Buffalo, with Gaustad and Paille each garnering two points (1g 1a) on the night. The Sabres fielded a lineup filled mostly with players employed by Rochester last season.

"Our goal is to evaluate everyone in the organization and tonight was one of those nights where the lineup was a bit low on experience", coach Lindy Ruff said. "Still, I expect more out of the defense and our goaltending was not up to par tonight."

Ruff utilized the following line combinations in the game: Chris Drury centered Hecht and Jason Pominville, Gaustad was inbetween Paille and Chris Thorburn, Adam Mair was in the middle of Taylor Pyatt and Mike Grier while Jiri Notovny centered Michael Ryan and Andrew Peters.

On defense, Ruff employed Brian Campbell and Henrik Tallinder, Rory Fitzpatrick and Jeff Jillson and lastly, Doug Janik and Nathan Paetsch.

The Sabres don't play again until Tuesday night, when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets at HSBC Arena. Game time is 7:00pm.
