The defender "pushed him in the helmet". Fairly un-spectacular imo.
I think it has a lot more to do with the lack of control the refs had the entire game which allowed it to get incredibly, incredibly chippy. The players were on the edge and that put him over.
It of course shouldn't have, but that's what happens when you let a game get out of control like that.
