Mike Mason(0-1) was hit with the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 8 hits in 4 innings. Phil Niekro(1-0) finally bested his Boston opposite, Bruce Hurst(0-1), by the score of 2 to 1. Niekro pitched well for New York in their victory. He went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 5 walks. Niekro chalked up 7 strikeouts. Boston had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Niekro got relief help from Dave Righetti who gained credit for his 1st save. Hurst was tagged with the loss. John McNamara was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.' Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. California ended up winning it in the 17th inning. Gary Pettis drew a walk. Pettis got a great jump and stole second easily. Rod Carew then delivered a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Reggie Jackson came up and he stroked a base-hit making California victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. For the game California out-hit Minnesota 16 to 11. Stu Cliburn(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 4 innings. Rick Lysander(0-1) was given the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk. Detroit tallied 4 runs in the 3rd inning when they had 3 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Lance Parrish who brought the crowd to their feet when he doubled with all three runners coming home. Cleveland threatened in the 9th but Detroit was able to put down the rally. Dan Petry(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 1 run. Petry was helped out by Randy O'Neal who recorded his 1st save. Don Schulze(0-1) was the loser. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Pat Corrales 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.' TORONTO AT KANSAS CITY Blue Jays....... 0 2 0 1 0 0 0 0 7 - 10 14 1 Royals.......... 1 1 0 0 0 1 4 0 0 - 7 11 1 Win:Lamp(1-0) Loss:Saberhagen(0-1) Save:Henke(2nd) Homeruns- L.Moseby(1st), E.Whitt(1st), A.Oliver(1st), L.Smith(1st), H.McRae(1st) Ernie Whitt left the yard and had 2 RBI at ROYALS STADIUM as the Toronto Blue Jays staged a comeback win over the Kansas City Royals by the count of 10 to 7. Toronto bats came alive with a big 9th inning as they creamed Kansas City blasting them with 7 runs on 7 hits. The key at-bat was by Al Oliver who silenced the crowd when he cracked a two-run shot (his 1st of the season). A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. The win was credited to Dennis Lamp(1-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs. Tom Henke got the save, his 2nd. Bret Saberhagen(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 8 runs and 10 hits in 8 innings. 'The only way this one could have been better', said Lamp, 'was if we had played it at home.' OAKLAND AT SEATTLE A's............. 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 - 2 7 1 Mariners........ 0 0 3 5 0 0 0 2 - 10 9 1 Win:Thomas(1-0) Loss:Birtsas(0-1) Homeruns- C.Lansford(1st), A.Davis(2nd), D.Henderson(3rd), B.Kearney(1st) The Seattle Mariners had very little trouble at The Kingdome downing the Oakland A's. The score was 10 to 2. Oakland never recovered after Seattle took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring 3 runners on 2 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Alvin Davis who made the Seattle fans a happy lot when he smacked a three-run homer (his 2nd of the season). Seattle banged out 9 on the afternoon. The victory was credited to Roy Thomas(1-0) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Tim Birtsas(0-1) took the loss. Seattle scored big getting 7 runs off him in 3 innings.
