The final score,, was 7 to 2. Montreal had the winning rally in the 9th inning when they tallied 6 runs on 5 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Andre Dawson who deflated the crowd as he laced a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners. Montreal won despite being out-hit by Cincinnati 11 hits to 8. The win went to Tim Burke(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Ted Power(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. Buck Rodgers was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til its over.' In the 6th inning Houston went on top for good plating an isolated run. Bill Doran cracked a solo homerun (his 1st of the season). Houston had just 3 hits for the afternoon. Nolan Ryan(1-0) allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Dave Smith earned his 1st save. Orel Hershiser(0-1) was charged with the loss. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered just 3 hits and no walks. SAN DIEGO AT SAN FRANCISCO Padres.......... 1 1 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 - 4 8 1 Giants.......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 3 1 Win:Hawkins(1-0) Loss:Krukow(0-1) Homeruns- G.Templeton(1st) Andy Hawkins was on top of his game, blanking San Francisco on just 3 hits and Garry Templeton touched them all as the San Diego Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants 4 to 0 at CANDLESTICK PARK. Hawkins(1-0) dominated San Francisco hitters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings. San Diego totaled 8 on the afternoon. The losing pitcher was Mike Krukow(0-1). He struck out 11 batters in 8 innings despite losing the game.
