San Diego started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first as they scored 3 runs on 3 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Steve Garvey who quieted the crowd when he tripled scoring two baserunners. Gossage pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 3rd save. The win went to Lamarr Hoyt(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Pascual Perez(0-1) was given the loss. He was touched for 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings. Chicago wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring 5 runners on 6 hits. That was all the offense they were to need. Montreal had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Rick Sutcliffe(1-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. David Palmer(0-1) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 5 hits and no walks without retiring a batter. PHILADELPHIA AT HOUSTON Phillies........ 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 2 11 4 Astros.......... 1 0 0 0 0 4 0 1 - 6 9 0 Win:Dipino(1-0) Loss:Hudson(0-1) Save:Smith(2nd) Homeruns- J.Mumphrey(1st) Dave Smith closed the door on Philadelphia and right fielder Jerry Mumphrey cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Houston Astros topped the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 6 to 2 at The Astrodome. Houston came up with 4 runs in the 6th inning when they had 5 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Mumphrey who excited the crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 1st of the season). Houston rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon. Frank Dipino(1-0) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory. Dipino got help from Smith who was credited with his 2nd save. Charles Hudson(0-1) was tagged with the loss. Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. San Francisco was victorious in the 10th inning. After two were out Chili Davis got things rolling when he drew a walk. Jeff Leonard came next and he drew a walk. Ron Roenicke then laced a single resulting in a run. Bob Brenly came up and he stroked a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. Although they lost, Los Angeles did out-hit San Francisco 12 to 9. Greg Minton(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no runs. Minton was helped out by Mark Davis who recorded his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was Bobby Castillo(0-1) in relief. CINCINNATI AT NEW YORK Reds............ 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 - 1 9 3 Mets............ 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 - 3 6 0 Win:Fernandez(1-0) Loss:Tibbs(0-1) Homeruns- D.Concepcion(1st) Sid Fernandez tossed a complete game as the New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 3 to 1 at SHEA STADIUM. Fernandez(1-0) gave a fine effort for New York. He went 9 innings surrendering 9 hits and 2 walks. Cincinnati made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Jay Tibbs(0-1) suffered the loss. He pitched 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 6 hits and no walks. 'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Pete Rose 'But we have to get over it and get ready for the next game.' ST. LOUIS AT PITTSBURGH Cardinals....... 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 6 1 Pirates......... 0 1 2 4 0 0 0 2 - 9 13 1 Win:Tunnell(1-0) Loss:Kepshire(0-1) Homeruns- J.Clark(1st), R.Reynolds(1st) Lee Tunnell reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts and R.J. Reynolds homered and had 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 9 to 1. Tunnell(1-0) put on a good performance. He didn't allow much, just 6 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. Pittsburgh had 13 hits overall, while St. Louis had 6. Kurt Kepshire(0-1) was charged with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. Whitey Herzog was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'
