The San Diego Padres won by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4. Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. San Diego came out on top in the 11th inning. Carmelo Martinez lashed a single. Terry Kennedy stepped into the batter's box and he stroked a single. Kevin McReynolds then reached on an error. Garry Templeton came up and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the run. The Atlanta batters went down meekly in the bottom of the 11th. The victory was credited to Craig Lefferts(2-0) who went 3 and 1/3 innings, allowing no runs. Lefferts got relief help from Roy Lee Jackson who gained credit for his 1st save. Rick Camp(0-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 2 innings. MONTREAL AT CHICAGO Expos........... 0 2 0 1 1 0 0 0 0 - 4 6 1 Cubs............ 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 - 2 8 0 Win:Laskey(1-0) Loss:Sanderson(0-1) Save:Reardon(2nd) Homeruns- T.Wallach(1st), G.Matthews(1st) Tim Wallach cracked a homer as the Montreal Expos topped the Chicago Cubs by a score of 4 to 2 at WRIGLEY FIELD. In the 2nd inning Montreal scored 2 runs when they had 3 base hits. They would hold up as the winning runs. Montreal had only 6 hits for the afternoon. Bill Laskey(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 and 2/3 innings and allowing 1 run. Jeff Reardon got the save, his 2nd. Scott Sanderson(0-1) was charged with the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered just 5 hits and no walks. PHILADELPHIA AT HOUSTON Phillies........ 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 1 4 0 Astros.......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 - 2 8 0 Win:Ryan(2-0) Loss:Denny(0-2) Nolan Ryan took a no-hitter into the 6th inning and right fielder Jerry Mumphrey had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at The Astrodome as the Houston Astros pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 2 to 1. Houston scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Glenn Davis kicked off the action when he laced a base-knock. Mark Bailey next to the plate and he drew a walk. Mumphrey then tripled resulting in an exciting win for Houston and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Houston managed 8 in their victory. Ryan(2-0) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. The right-handed Ryan lost his no-hit bid when Rick Schu doubled with nobody out in the 6th inning. John Denny(0-2) suffered the loss. Ryan was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun out there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got the victory and I'll sure take 12 strikeouts anytime!' SAN FRANCISCO AT LOS ANGELES Giants.......... 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 9 1 Dodgers......... 0 0 2 4 0 0 0 1 - 7 9 0 Win:Valenzuela(2-0) Loss:Blue(0-1) Homeruns- B.Brenly(1st), F.Valenzuela(1st) Bill Madlock had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Fernando Valenzuela went the distance as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants by a score of 7 to 1. Valenzuela(2-0) looked very much in control throughout the day. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 9 hits and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.25 to 1.59. Both teams ended up with 9 on the afternoon. Vida Blue(0-1) was given the loss. Los Angeles scored big getting 6 runs off him in 3 and 2/3 innings. CINCINNATI AT NEW YORK Reds............ 0 0 0 1 0 2 0 2 0 - 5 9 0 Mets............ 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 - 2 8 0 Win:Soto(1-0) Loss:Gooden(1-1) Save:Power(1st) Homeruns- G.Redus-2(2nd), D.Parker(2nd), M.Wilson(1st), G.Carter(3rd) Mario Soto mowed down 10 New York batters and Gary Redus blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at SHEA STADIUM as the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets by the count of 5 to 2. The New York fans didn't appreciate the big day Redus had. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 4th inning, doubled resulting in a run in the 6th inning and blasted a solo shot (his 2nd of the season) in the 8th inning. Cincinnati banged out 9 on the afternoon. The win was credited to Soto(1-0) who went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs. Soto got help from Ted Power who earned his 1st save. Dwight Gooden(1-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of work. Soto, when asked about his 10 strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!' ST. LOUIS AT PITTSBURGH Cardinals....... 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 - 2 10 0 Pirates......... 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 - 1 6 0 Win:Andujar(1-0) Loss:Rhoden(0-1) Save:Lahti(1st) Homeruns- B.Almon(1st) Joaquin Andujar(1-0) and Rick Rhoden(0-1) treated the Pittsburgh fans to a fine pitching duel at THREE RIVERS STADIUM. The St. Louis Cardinals eventually emerged as victors over the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 2 to 1. Andujar pitched a solid game. He went 5 innings surrendering 3 hits and no walks lowering his ERA to 2.70. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Andujar got help from Jeff Lahti who was credited with his 1st save. Chuck Tanner was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more white hairs on this noggin of mine.'
