Designated hitter Ron Kittle ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Chicago
White Sox defeated the Boston Red Sox in 12 innings by a score of 8 to 7 at
FENWAY PARK.
Both teams were tied at 7 runs apiece after nine innings. Chicago was
victorious in the 12th inning. Carlton Fisk drew a walk. Kittle next to the
plate and he drew a walk. Jerry Hairston got his turn next, but he was a
strikeout victim. Greg Walker stepped in and he drew a walk to load the
bases. Tim Hulett stepped into the box and worked the squeeze play to
perfection scoring the run. Despite losing, Boston out-hit Chicago 15 to 11.
The victory went to Bob James(1-0) who went 4 innings, allowing no runs. Steve
Crawford(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up no hits and 2
walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Mike Smithson delivered 9 solid innings and third baseman Gary Gaetti hit a
homerun as the Minnesota Twins outscored the California Angels 3 to
2.
Minnesota had 1 run cross the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning.
California threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Smithson(1-0) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Jim
Slaton(0-1) absorbed the loss. 'When Smithson is on like that it is a tough
game to play, no doubt about it,' Gene Mauch said. 'He always pitches well
against us.'

and 2/3 innings allowing 7 hits and 3 walks. Seattle banged out 8 on the
afternoon.
Tim Birtsas(0-2) was charged with the loss. He pitched 2/3 of an inning
giving up 2 hits and 4 walks.
