ice-cold Cleveland Indians 4 to 1 at MUNICIPAL STADIUM.
Dennis Martinez(1-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Martinez. He
surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings improving his ERA from
5.40 to 2.84. Cleveland was out-hit by Baltimore, 15 hits to 4.
Martinez got relief help from Don Aase who gained credit for his 1st save.
Don Schulze(0-2) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 11 hits in
6 innings.

Dan Petry went 7 and two third strong innings as the Detroit Tigers outscored
the floundering Milwaukee Brewers 5 to 1.
Milwaukee was unable to recover after Detroit went ahead in the bottom of the
4th inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. Kirk Gibson doubled. Lance Parrish
came next and he banged out a single scoring the run. Detroit had 7 hits for
the afternoon.
Petry(2-0) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Willie
Hernandez was credited with his 4th save. Ted Higuera(0-1) suffered the
loss.

Center fielder Tony Armas lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 4 RBI and
Al Nipper allowed John McNamara to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
at ROYALS STADIUM where the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 8 to
4.
The Kansas City fans didn't appreciate the big day Armas had. He doubled
which scored a run in the 1st inning and clubbed a three-run home run (his
1st of the season) in the 5th inning. Boston totaled 12 on the afternoon.
Nipper(1-0) was the winner allowing 4 runs for the game. Bud Black(0-1) was
tagged with the loss. He was touched for 12 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3
innings.

28,227 fans were treated to a fine game at YANKEE STADIUM as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The New York Yankees won by the
slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.
The score was knotted at 6 after nine innings. Finally, New York pulled the
game out in the 18th inning. Henry Cotto ripped a base-knock. Mike
Pagliarulo stepped into the batter's box and he laced a one-base hit.
Pagliarulo took second on the throw. After an out was recorded, Willie
Randolph stepped in and he delivered a base-hit giving New York the victory
and sending the 28,227 home-town fans home happy. New York had 16 hits for
the game and Chicago had 13.
Bob Shirley(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 innings. Bob
James(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He pitched 6 innings and
surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk.

The Oakland A's nipped the Seattle Mariners 4 to 3 at OAKLAND COLISEUM in a
hard fought contest.
Seattle surrendered all of the runs Oakland needed in the 2nd inning when they
scored 4 runs on 3 hits. That was all the runs Bill Krueger(2-0) needed.
Seattle went down quietly in the 9th.
Krueger got help from Steve Ontiveros who was credited with his 2nd save.
Mark Langston(0-2) ended up with the loss. He allowed 5 hits and 7 walks in
6 innings.

Jimmy Key blanked Texas in a very well-pitched complete game as the
blistering-hot Toronto Blue Jays pulled out a win over the Texas Rangers by a
score of 1 to 0 at EXHIBITION STADIUM.
Toronto scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. George Bell
smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 1st of the season) resulting in a
mighty exciting win for Toronto and the 26,448 home town fans in attendance.
Toronto had only 6 hits for the game.
Key(1-0) was credited with the shutout. Mike Mason(0-2) was charged with the
loss. Toronto continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 7 games
and counting.
