Boston scored 5 runs in the top of the 5th inning when they had 5 base hits. The highlight belonged to Bill Buckner who silenced the stadium when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 5th of the season). Boston banged out 15 on the afternoon. Boyd(5-3) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Dennis Martinez(5-5) was tagged with the loss. By surrending 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings his ERA jumped from 4.54 to 4.90. Kansas City took the lead for good in the top of the 2nd inning as they scored 2 runs on 1 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Jorge Orta who quieted the crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 1st of the season). Kansas City had a total of 11 hits for the game. The victory went to Charlie Leibrandt(3-4) who went 7 innings, allowing 5 runs. Beckwith got the save, his 1st. Ron Romanick(3-5) was given the loss. Kansas City scored big getting 6 runs off him in 2 and 1/3 innings. Kansas City continued their winnings ways improving their record to 27-27. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. With the loss, the California ballclub's record is 23-31. SEATTLE AT CLEVELAND Mariners........ 0 0 0 0 0 0 4 0 1 - 5 7 1 Indians......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 7 0 Win:Swift(3-5) Loss:Heaton(0-11) Save:Nunez(2nd) Bill Swift(3-5), with relief help from Edwin Nunez, whitewashed Cleveland while the Seattle Mariners scored 5 runs in a day game at MUNICIPAL STADIUM. Swift gave Seattle a solid outing. He allowed only 5 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 1/3 innings. Both teams ended up with 7 on the afternoon. Nunez earned the save, his 2nd. Neal Heaton(0-11) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 4 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings. NEW YORK AT MILWAUKEE Yankees......... 6 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 6 10 3 Brewers......... 1 0 0 1 0 2 0 0 0 - 4 14 1 Win:Cowley(5-3) Loss:Vuckovich(0-6) Save:Righetti(15th) Homeruns- D.Baylor(6th) In a close game it was the New York Yankees 6, the Milwaukee Brewers 4 at COUNTY STADIUM. New York came up with all the runs they needed in the 1st inning when they scored 6 runs on 7 hits. That early run support was enough for Joe Cowley(5-3) and New York. Milwaukee had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Cowley got help from Dave Righetti who was credited with his 15th save. Pete Vuckovich(0-6) was the loser. He surrendered 6 hits and no walks in 2/3 of an inning. Despite losing George Bamberger was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.' CHICAGO AT MINNESOTA White Sox....... 0 0 0 3 3 1 0 0 0 - 7 9 2 Twins........... 1 0 0 1 0 1 2 0 0 - 5 11 1 Win:Davis(3-2) Loss:Blyleven(7-4) Save:Spillner(1st) Homeruns- T.Brunansky(7th) Daryl Boston hit 2 doubles as the Chicago White Sox topped the Minnesota Twins by a score of 7 to 5 at METRODOME. Minnesota was unable to claim the lead after Chicago went ahead in the 4th inning when they tallied 3 runs on 4 hits. Minnesota made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Joel Davis(3-2) allowed 5 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Davis got relief help from Dan Spillner who gained credit for his 1st save. Bert Blyleven(7-4) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings. 'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Davis said, 'this was one of those times.' TEXAS AT OAKLAND Rangers......... 0 0 0 1 0 0 3 0 1 - 5 10 1 A's............. 1 0 0 2 0 1 0 0 0 - 4 8 1 Win:Hough(6-5) Loss:Ontiveros(3-2) Homeruns- M.Davis(11th) Charlie Hough pitched a complete game at OAKLAND COLISEUM as the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland A's 5 to 4. The game was won by Texas with a run in the top of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Bobby Jones doubled. Pete O'Brien stepped into the batter's box and he was walked intentionally. Gary Ward then lined a single scoring the run. Texas managed 10 in their victory. The win went to Hough(6-5) who allowed 4 runs in the game. The losing pitcher was Steve Ontiveros(3-2) in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in 2 and 2/3 innings. TEXAS AT OAKLAND Rangers......... 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 0 0 - 4 6 1 A's............. 1 3 0 1 0 0 0 1 - 6 8 1 Win:McCatty(2-6) Loss:Schmidt(0-5) Save:Howell(13th) Homeruns- D.Walker(5th), M.Gallego(4th), T.Phillips(2nd) In a two run game the Oakland A's got by the Texas Rangers by the score of 6 to 4. Oakland went ahead for good in the bottom of the 4th inning plating an isolated run on 2 hits. Jay Howell pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 13th save. Steve McCatty(2-6) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Dave Schmidt(0-5) took the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 2 hits in 5 innings. Jim Clancy(5-2) finally bested his Detroit opposite, Jack Morris(5-4), by the score of 3 to 1. Toronto had 2 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning. After two were out Jesse Barfield keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Barfield got a good lead and stole second. Ernie Whitt then cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 7th of the season). That early scoring held up. Toronto finished with 8 hits in the victory. Clancy got help from Tom Henke who earned his 14th save. Morris was the losing pitcher. He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 walks.
