It was a laugher out at FULTON CTY STADIUM. The San Francisco Giants squad
ripped Atlanta pitching for a total of 12 runs. Jim Gott(5-3), with relief
help from Scott Garrelts, surrendered 3 runs to Atlanta.
Dan Driessen had a good day at the plate. He doubled in the 5th inning,
banged out a single in the 7th inning and clubbed a three-run home run (his
4th of the season) in the 9th inning. Atlanta was out-hit by San Francisco,
18 hits to 10.
Zane Smith(3-4) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 7 hits
and 4 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings. San Francisco now has a record of 29-25.
With this loss, Atlanta has a 3-7 record of late, 22-31, worst in the
division overall.

13,992 fans watched an exciting game at RIVERFRONT STADIUM. The Los Angeles
Dodgers topped the Cincinnati Reds by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.
Los Angeles won the game with a run in the 9th inning. Enos Cabell ripped a
base-knock. Tommy Lasorda then called for a steal which was successful. Two
outs later Mike Marshall came up and he was walked intentionally. John
Franco then uncorked a wild pitch scoring the run. Los Angeles won despite
being out-hit by Cincinnati 12 hits to 8.
The winning pitcher was Rick Honeycutt(4-5) who allowed 4 runs in 8 innings.
Honeycutt got help from Bobby Castillo who was credited with his 4th save.
Franco(7-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he
did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work.
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Tommy Lasorda said after the game. 'Honeycutt did not have
command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew
how to pitch!'

At The Astrodome, the Houston faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel. Joe Niekro(2-6) finally bested his San Diego counterpart, Eric
Show(7-5), by the score of 2 to 1.
In the 4th inning Houston scored 2 runs with the help of 4 hits. They would
prove to be the difference in the contest. After the 4th inning, neither
team was able to score.
Niekro got help from Dave Smith who earned his 15th save. Show was hit with
the loss. He gave up 5 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

separated the combatants at game's end. The Montreal Expos won by the

David Palmer(5-2) pitched a solid game. He surrendered 5 hits and 2 walks in
7 innings reducing his ERA from 4.73 to 4.32. Montreal had only 6 hits for
the afternoon.
Gary Lucas was credited with his 1st save. The losing pitcher was Lary

Right fielder Darryl Strawberry slammed 2 homeruns and Ed Lynch allowed 2 hits
while blanking Philadelphia as the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia
Phillies by the score of 3 to 0 at VETERANS STADIUM.
Lynch(4-1) was on top of his game. He surrendered only 2 hits and 2 walks in
9 innings improving his ERA from 2.82 to 2.52. New York banged out 9 on the
afternoon.
John Denny(3-6) ended up with the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 8
innings. 'Lynch was the man today,' Davey Johnson said. 'He had just about
every pitch working.'

John Tudor pitched 10 strong innings at THREE RIVERS STADIUM where the St.
Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings 3 to 2.
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. St. Louis ended up
winning it in the 10th inning. After two were out Vince Coleman laced a
single. Coleman got a great jump and stole second easily. Tom Lawless then
doubled scoring the run. St. Louis totaled 7 on the afternoon.
The win was credited to Tudor(8-3) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs. Al
Holland(1-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.
'He had his 'A' game today,' Whitey Herzog said of Tudor. 'Very impressive
performance.'
