Biography
At the 1992 U.S. Olympic trials, Dan O'Brien passed on several heights during the pole vault that he could have easily made. That decision cost him a trip to the Olympics when he failed to clear the first height he attempted, 15' 8". It didn't take Dan long to recover from that dissapointment as later in 1992 he broke the world record, setting a mark that stood for almost seven years. At Atlanta he overpowered the rest of the field, winning gold, making him the first American Olympic decathlon champion in 20 years.
