As a matter of fact, one of my hotel layovers for LAX is in Redondo Beach. I generally go down to the public pier where there is a great selection of very fresh fish and seafood. There is other food too. Not a bad place to be and fits right in with the kind of trip that you've got scheduled. The Pier is a great place to sit and watch the sun go down. You can find some nightlife there as well.
