Brett

#1 (d1/s2): B Open 200 Medley Relay (Team C) – Nice Breast leg for Brett swimming a 34 low…

#15 (d1/s2): B Open 500 Free (5:45.55Y ) - Didn’t do better, in fact he added 5 seconds to finish with a 5:50.68, but it really didn’t matter. He came in seeded 10 and finished 10 several seconds ahead of 11 and several seconds behind 9.

#17 (d1/s2): B Open 200 Free Relay (Team C) - Another good split in the relay with a 27.8 with only about 10 minutes rest from the 500.

#21 (d1/s2): B Open 100 Breast (1:12.50Y ) – So this was Brett’s last shot to meet the varsity letter cut standard of 1:15.35. He’d beaten this standard a couple of times already this season and he came up just an eye blink short a few weeks ago when he swam a 1:15.5. Unfortunately, he’s been really struggling with his breast and this meet was no exception. He opened with a 35 mid time in the first 50, which was not a good sign, and he came home to post a poor 1:16.88.

Brett’s failure to get the cut time was heartbreaking as he could really use some positive reinforcement from this sport he spends so much time working on. If the coach goes by the strict letter of the rules regarding earning a varsity letter, then Brett won’t get his. She might make an exception because Brett earned the tenth most points for all boys, despite the fact he missed 3 meets during the season, and he did yeoman’s work swimming the 500 in every meet he participated. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Overall, South finished 2nd in the county (even without the benefit of a dive team), losing to Lambert (who will challenge for a State Championship again this season). Next season South may be hard pressed to maintain second, as a number of solid male point earners, plus a Div 1 swimmer will be graduating, and it doesn't appear there are many kids in the pipeline ready to fill those shoes.

Just a quick follow up. Brett missed practiced on Friday because he was up studying for a test until after midnight on Thursday. To make up for this missed practice, we went to the pool on Sunday, and not only did he get a workout in, he really focused on areas where he was weak, including a good bit of fly, underwater strokes, backstroke starts, etc. I was really proud of him not only going, but using the time to address some areas where he needs work.
