As of about 5a today, the kid is home from school, almost certainly for the duration (aside from a trip to move his furniture back here sometime between now & July 31)
That arrival time IS part of the story. It would have been more like 2a ... except for a full scale tire blowout about 40 miles from home. He's fine, the car is fine, luck was on his side and he handled it very well.
We did, I'll admit, discuss whether the next occurrence during the trek would be
a) a freak snowstorm
or
b) a meteor strike
