North America Amateur Cup - Third Round
Potomac vs Wake Forest Cougars
Attendance: 79
Potomac is in our tier in the Colonial league system.
Starting Lineup
GK: Garcia
D: Rongen/Pickering/Hernandez/Varela
M: Williams/Wilkins
AM: Gallardo/Crook
ST: Roth/Navarro
We're going on 4 days rest and play again in 3 more days, so we swap out literally our entire lineup here. Counterattacking on the road.
7': We build up down the left side and get a number of men fowrard, Williams with a ball into the area for Roth, he controls it, lays it off to Gallardo who shoots and scores! Nice play from Roth to make the extra pass there. 1-0
19': We get a counterattack going, Navarro sends it out left to Gallardo, ahead to Roth, he tries a shot, but blocked.
31': Williams wins a ball in our end, quickly to midfield for Roth, he sends it long for Navarro, who breaks behidn the defense. He's got a great look, clear cut chance, but its well wide, poorly taken.
HALF: We are dominating here, 60% possession, 5 shots to 1, far better passing/tackling/heading. We just need to not lapse and give up a poor goal.
54': They get a cross and easy goal, but, their man was miles offsides.
56': This time, no offsides. Their ST de la Rose gets open in the area, Garcia gets a hand on the shot but its in. 1-1
58': They send a cross in, but Hernandez heads it out. They recover and work their offense again, a striker just sprints by Hernandez to receive a pass and easily pokes it in. 1-2
70': We'll attack to try to get even here.
82': Garcia catches an errant cross and kicks it long. Williams at midfield, ahead to Roth, Roth sends it left to Gallardo, he makes a run into the area, gets his own chance, and scores!! 2-2
82': Cooper and Perkins in for Crook and Wilkins.
FULL TIME: Potomac played much, much better in the second half, but we got even and can still advance.
We watch one corner kick, only highlight of the first 15 minutes.
119': Leon Roth picks up a minor injury, ugh.
On to penalties, nothing at all happened in the extra time.
Brian Williams misses our first penalty kick. That would usually mean this is a done deal b/c penalties are weird in FM14, but they miss their 3rd penalty wide, so its 2-2 after 3 kicks each.
After 5 shots each we're tied at 4 and have to keep going.
I'm worried when Roth steps up for our 7th kick, his fitness went to shit when he got hurt, but he scores. After 8 kicks we're tied at 7.
Both keepers score on the 11th round, 10-10 and back to the start.
After 15 kicks its 14-14.
The 17th kick taken by Potomac is saved by Garcia, he dove the right way and got his hands on it! DR Bob Varela steps up with a chance to win the game, and does so.
This is so silly.
Potomac (15) 2 : 2p (16) Wake Forest
Man of the Match: Jeff Gallardo (8.8)
Goals: Gallardo 2
Assists: Roth 2 (7.6)
Varela with a 5.9 in defense, Wilkins and Crook 6.4's.
This is probably the first time I've ever been impressed by Jeff Gallardo, he's been a deep bench option for me for 2 years now
-- We receive $3,730 for this win.
Injury Update
ST Leon Roth has a hamstring injury that will keep him out 5-6 weeks. Assuming he needs some practice time to re-gain match fitness after he comes back, he may not play again this year.
Roth has been a secondary option in league play, just 2 goals in 7 matches, but he's started 10 times in various cups and has been an absolute beast, scoring 8 goals and making 6 assists in those 10 matches.
