Haha! Reading online, apparently this is the way it's been for all games in the series; if you wanted a separate village, you had to buy an entire new game cartridge/disc/whatever. Unfortunately with the Switch being based on Profiles, even if I bought a second version of the game I'd be stuck with the same island because of the profiles on the device. Not sure there's a fix coming, unfortunately.
Edit: I've got Stardew Valley if I really get a hankering for that type of game, I'm not
too miffed about it. Fun to watch my wife get excited for a video game!
