This is a pretty common technique that I swear I've seen used for decades....I want to say it has roots in hispanic/mexican culture (though I may be pulling that straight out of my butt), so maybe it's more of a west coast phenomena. Similarly, I've been taught to use a can of root beer when making pulled pork, and I've also heard of a chicken marinade using 7-Up....though I don't know if there's some specific set of rules for your meat/soda marinade pairing.
