Witt pitched well for California in their victory. He went 7 innings surrendering 5 hits and 4 walks seeing his ERA drop from 5.77 to 4.97. California managed 7 in their victory. Donnie Moore was credited with his 6th save. TEXAS AT CHICAGO Rangers......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 3 0 White Sox....... 1 0 0 2 1 0 0 0 - 4 9 0 Win:Burns(3-3) Loss:Hooton(3-3) Homeruns- D.Boston(1st) Oscar Gamble had 2 base hits and Britt Burns blanked Texas allowing just 3 hits as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Texas Rangers 4 to 0 at COMISKEY PARK. Burns(3-3) was virtually untouchable. He allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Burns whiffed an impressive total of 12 Texas batters reducing his ERA from 4.40 to 3.67. Chicago rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon. Burt Hooton(3-3) took the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 8 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Tony LaRussa was asked about the performance of Burns, 'He had his good stuff out there this afternoon. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.' Bernazard was really 'in the zone'. He cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 2nd inning, lofted a three-run bomb (his 4th of the season) in the 3rd inning and ripped a base-knock in the 5th inning. Boston was out-hit by Cleveland, 14 hits to 10. The victory went to Don Schulze(2-4) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs. Schulze got help from Jerry Reed who earned his 2nd save. Al Nipper(4-1) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by Cleveland, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings. 'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and swung,' Bernazard said. Ted Higuera(4-3) finally bested his Kansas City counterpart, Bud Black(3-4), by the score of 2 to 0. Higuera put on a good performance. He gave up just 2 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings improving his ERA from 3.51 to 3.07. The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither team was able to score again. Higuera got help from Bob Gibson who was credited with his 3rd save. The losing pitcher was Black. He surrendered 2 runs and 5 hits in 8 innings. TORONTO AT MINNESOTA Blue Jays....... 2 0 8 0 0 1 0 0 0 - 11 15 0 Twins........... 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 - 3 13 1 Win:Alexander(4-3) Loss:Viola(2-3) Homeruns- R.Smalley(6th) Jesse Barfield had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at METRODOME as the blistering-hot Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 11 to 3. Toronto took the lead off Frank Viola in the first inning as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. Toronto had a total of 15 hits for the game. Doyle Alexander(4-3) got the win allowing 3 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Viola(2-3) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings. It was another victory for Toronto at METRODOME. Now their winning streak stands at 7 games. 'Everything seems to be going right for us' said Bobby Cox. 'I've got the easiest job in the league right now!' DETROIT AT OAKLAND Tigers.......... 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 3 - 6 12 2 A's............. 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 1 0 - 3 5 0 Win:Tanana(4-2) Loss:Atherton(0-2) Save:Hernandez(11th) Homeruns- C.Lemon(3rd), B.Garbey(2nd), M.Davis(7th) Frank Tanana had a strong outing and Chet Lemon cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland A's by a score of 6 to 3. Detroit erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Lou Whitaker began the rally when he stroked a single. Alan Trammell was next and he doubled. Kirk Gibson then was walked intentionally. Lemon followed and he smacked a three-run homer (his 3rd of the season). For the game Detroit out-hit Oakland 12 to 5. The win was credited to Tanana(4-2) who went 8 innings allowing 3 runs. Willie Hernandez got the save, his 11th. Keith Atherton(0-2) suffered the loss in relief. He was not very effective, surrendering 4 runs in 2 innings. BALTIMORE AT SEATTLE Orioles......... 0 0 0 3 5 0 0 0 0 - 8 11 0 Mariners........ 0 0 2 0 0 0 1 2 0 - 5 10 0 Win:Flanagan(2-0) Loss:Young(2-4) Save:Aase(3rd) Homeruns- C.Ripken(8th), M.Young(11th), G.Roenicke(4th), J.Presley(4th), G.Thomas(7th), I.Calderon(3rd) Center fielder Gary Roenicke connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at The Kingdome where the streaking Baltimore Orioles beat the reeling Seattle Mariners 8 to 5. Seattle was unable to recover after Baltimore went ahead in the top of the 4th inning when they tallied 3 runs on 2 hits. The big moment was provided by Roenicke who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he belted a three-run homer (his 4th of the season). Baltimore had 11 hits for the afternoon. The winning pitcher was Mike Flanagan(2-0) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Flanagan was helped out by Don Aase who recorded his 3rd save. The loss was charged to Matt Young(2-4). He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. Baltimore won for the 7th straight time. Chuck Cottier was upset but philosophical about the loss. 'Sometimes you run into a team that's on a roll. This was one of those times.'
