In a two run game the Atlanta Braves got by the Chicago Cubs by the score of 7
to 5.
Atlanta claimed the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2 runs on
2 hits. The big moment was provided by Dale Murphy who made the crowd happy
when he cracked a two-run shot (his 10th of the season). Atlanta had 11 hits
overall, while Chicago had 8.
Steve Bedrosian(3-3) allowed 5 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Gene Garber recorded his 3rd save. The loss was charged to Steve
Trout(0-2). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 4
innings.

Joe Hesketh pitched a complete game at OLYMPIC STADIUM where the Montreal
Expos beat the San Diego Padres by the score of 7 to 1.
Hesketh(5-0) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He didn't allow much,
just 6 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 2.25 to 2.00.
Montreal rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.
Andy Hawkins(3-3) was charged with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 1 walk in
6 innings.

Sid Fernandez allowed 2 hits while blanking San Francisco at SHEA STADIUM
where the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 8 to 0.
Fernandez(4-2) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for
the San Francisco batters. He allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings
lowering his ERA from 2.45 to 2.04. New York finished with 11 hits in the
victory.
Atlee Hammaker(3-3) absorbed the loss. He pitched 4 innings allowing 6 hits
and no walks. 'When Fernandez is on like that it is a tough game to play, no
doubt about it,' Jim Davenport said. 'He always pitches well against us.'

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in 10 innings by a
score of 5 to 2 at VETERANS STADIUM.
The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Los Angeles was
victorious in the 10th inning. Terry Whitfield led off the inning for Los
Angeles when he slapped a single. Steve Yeager came to the plate and drew a
walk. After an out was recorded, Steve Sax stepped up to the plate and he
lined a single, and an error was also committed, driving in a run. Bill
Madlock was up next and he drew a walk to load the bases. Mike Marshall
stepped into the box and delivered a one-base hit which accounted for two
additional runs. Philadelphia was out-hit by Los Angeles, 14 hits to 6.
Tom Niedenfuer(5-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Bobby Castillo
recorded the save, his 3rd. The losing pitcher was Larry Andersen(2-1) in
relief.
CINCINNATI AT PITTSBURGH

Jim Morrison had 4 hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Cincinnati Reds
by a score of 4 to 3 at THREE RIVERS STADIUM.
Lee Tunnell(3-1) had a fairly solid outing. He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in
6 and 2/3 innings. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh was able
to put down the rally.
Tunnell got relief help from Cecilio Guante who gained credit for his 1st
save. Tom Browning(3-4) took the loss. He was knocked around by Pittsburgh,
allowing 12 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Tunnell said,
'this was one of those times.'
ST. LOUIS AT HOUSTON

Terry Pendleton had 2 base hits and 3 RBI and John Tudor allowed Whitey Herzog
to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at The Astrodome as the St.
Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 4 to 1.
Houston was unable to claim the lead after St. Louis went ahead in the top of
the 6th inning plating an isolated run. The game was a scoreless duel until
the 6th inning.
The winning pitcher was Tudor(4-3) who allowed 1 run for the game. Mike
Scott(2-2) was the loser. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing
an earned run in his 6 innings of work.
